Reducing the impact of its business on the environment and promoting sustainability is one of Tigernuts key strategic objectives. The company is embracing its responsibility in the fight against climate change by innovatively changing its modus operandi. From 2021, all containers of organic tiger nuts imported from Africa will be shipped on freighters that run on second-generation biofuel. This is thanks to the company’s partnership with CMA CGM, a world leader in shipping and logistics. A small revolution.
The use of biofuel, a clear step towards sustainability
The size of the challenge is no less than to protect the environment: the goal of Tigernuts is to be carbon neutral by 2025. Although the road ahead is still long, the direction of travel seems pretty clear: “Transporting our raw material from West Africa accounts for around 95% of our total emissions. It is obvious that we have to focus our efforts on this logistical aspect. The Cleaner Energy Biofuel solution proposed by CMA CGM meets our needs perfectly”, explains Daniel Carrión, Managing Director of Tigernuts. He continues: “We want to do everything in our power to protect the planet and adapt our growth and development model accordingly. For us, the energy transition is not so much urgent as it is vital, and this first experience is just the beginning for Tigernuts”.
Instant results from 2021
Thanks to the use of biofuel, from 2021 Tigernuts will be able to reduce its carbon footprint by 43 tonnes of CO2 for the first year, equivalent to a 17% reduction in emissions (based on the 2020 assessment, available upon request here). From a commercial standpoint, Tigernuts is also enhancing its image as a sustainable and innovative supplier.
The biofuel UCOME (Used Cooking Oil Methyl Ester) is obtained from used cooking oil and certified by the ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) European system. In addition, CMA CGM uses this innovative source of energy within the framework and according to the methodology established by the Clean Cargo Working Group, and in compliance with international standards such as ISO 14020/14021/14067.
